The sub-editor will be responsible for ensuring the content of Retail Newsagent is accurate, informative and visually exciting. The role involves overseeing the production of the magazine including copy subbing, headline writing and page layout, working closely with the editor and art editor. It also involves working to tight deadlines and managing freelance resource.

Retail Newsagent is a paid-for weekly title read by the UK’s leading independent news and convenience retailers. Content includes market-leading news, a mix of news and product-led features, and analysis. With a work underway on a new design to reflect the quality of the editorial, the magazine has a passionate and loyal readership, which has grown rapidly in the last year.

Your duties will include:

  • Checking copy for accuracy, style and grammar
  • Liaising with reporters and features writers to ensure high quality journalism
  • Writing lively, creative headlines, stand-firsts, captions and pull quotes
  • Laying out pages using templates to present information that is both visually appealing and easy to use
  • Managing the production schedule in order to hit deadlines and overseeing freelance resource

To be considered for this position, you must demonstrate experience in a similar role, and have a proven ability to sub-edit copy and lay out pages. You must be tenacious about accuracy, resolute about what makes good copy and confident about challenging members of the team. You should also be driven, committed and have endless enthusiasm for the magazine.
