Salary: Research Associate: £30,942 - £40,322 per annum

The Role

 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate position within the Newcastle Cancer Centre Pharmacology Group at the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer. The post is funded by Cancer Research UK, under the supervision of Professor Gareth Veal.

 

You will have experience in drug quantification assay development or be looking to develop interests in pharmacokinetics in a cancer setting and a desire to further develop your research career in this area.

 

You will be required to plan and carry out the development and validation of novel assays (LC-MS, molecular biology, ELISA) to facilitate the analysis of clinical trial samples. All work will be carried out according to GCLP regulations, in which you will ideally have some experience.

 

As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles.  These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.

 

This is a full time, fixed term post, available until 31.03.2022.

Key Accountabilities

 

• Development and validation of assays for the quantification of anticancer drugs and in early phase clinical trials


• Generation of assay validation plans and reports


• Analysis of samples collected during clinical trials


• Working according to GCLP practices


• Independent planning and communication of experimental strategies


• Independent analysis and interpretation of experimental data


• Presentation of results in peer-reviewed publications and at scientific conferences


• Contributions to laboratory meetings, e.g. problem solving, internal seminars, journal club


• Performing risk assessments and maintaining safety laboratory records (e.g. COSHH) in consultation with academic staff


• Assistance in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students


• Organisation and assistance in general laboratory duties, e.g. equipment maintenance, stores

Essential

• High level analytical skills

• Team-working skills within multidisciplinary research teams


• Commitment to continuing professional development


• Good IT and computing skills


• Good communication and presentation skills


• Substantial experience in assay development (LC/MS and/or ELISA approaches)


• Experience of handling clinical samples

Desirable

• Experience in working to GCP standards


• Publication record in peer-reviewed journals


• Presentation of work at scientific meetings

Qualifications

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science subject – preferably biomedical


• PhD in clinical pharmacology, cancer research or other relevant area

Desirable

• Some level of GCP and/or GCLP training or knowledge
