Founded in 1898, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine.

LSTM works in over 70 countries to fulfil its mission of improving the health of the worlds poorest people, heling to bring research innovation and scientific breakthroughs from laboratory research to those most in need.

Laboratory research is mainly based in the Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases, a £23 million facility. LSTM has matched this investment in new facilities, such as the recently opened Wolfson Building as well as an investment in new talent, increasing staff numbers from 160 in 2001 to just over 430 by 2014.

LSTMs collaborations with governments; health ministries; universities and research institutions across the world have created and sustained a reputation as a centre of excellence with a research portfolio worth well over £210 million.

LSTM is one of the few postgraduate centres of excellence in the field of tropical medicine. Over 620 students from just over 60 countries undertake learning opportunities ranging from professional courses to Masters and PhD programmes in Liverpool itself and across the developing world. Many of LSTMs alumni go on tho fulfil senior roles in public health and academia.
